The Skånes Djurpark Suite: Requiem for Wolf
As some of you may know. A terrible tragedy happened in Skånes Djurpark this january. All of the wolves, there was twelve of them, escaped from their enclosure and were all shot and killed by the keepers. So, this of course is a special installment in the Skånes Djurpark Suite. It's my memento mori, a "Requiem for Wolf."
My thoughts of course to the wolves and their unhappy keepers and killers, but also to Robert Frost, the american poet whom I borrowed the voice and the poem sampled in the requiem from. A classic poem, "Fire and Ice" was Frosts take on Dantes Inferno. Nine lines, like the nine rings of hell. Compact wisdom, and mesmerising beauty, about mans (and maybe wolves) inevitable destructiveness.
"Fire and Ice" (1920)
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

It´s a new installment! It´s called ”Fölet”, which is
swedish for ”the foal”, meaning a horse (in latin: ”Equus”) that is one year or
younger. I could have named it simply ”The Horse” (in swedish: ”Hästen”) but I
just felt like I captured a baby horse rather than a full grown one. I haven´t
yet decided whether to also compose a song for the adult horse.
It´s electronic thing, quite intense, and it contains some
wonderful voice samples
I had this idea of using the same guitar thing in tree
different songs, in completely different forms. So, this is actually the same
guitar figure as in the Garmisch song ”Glimmer” (which you will find further
down in this blog) but recorded in a different key and not tuned down as in
”Glimmer”. I found it kind of amusing to use the same melody and making
something completely different out of it. If you wondered, the third song using
the same part is a work in progress named, as a working title, ”The Camel” (no,
there´s no camels in Skånes Djurpark, but thats a problem I´m saving for

The Skånes Djurpark Suite: Uven
Third installment in the suite: ”Uven”. In latin: ”Bubo Bubo”. In english: ”Eagle owl” or ”Great-horned owl”. It’s the biggest owl in the world.
This is a quite different song compared to previous installments in the The Skånes Djurpark Suite. It's basically an improvisation on piano. As animals must be different, so does music.

The Skånes Djurpark Suite: Järven
Second installment: ”Järven”. In latin: ”Gulo Gulo”. In
The wolverine is an highly endangered animal. There’s only
an estimated 350 specimen of the species in Sweden.
It’s also a killing machine. The wolverine is a small
carnivore, compared to for example bears, but it’s an animal known for its
unproportional strength and ferocity. The wolverine kan kill a prey many times
bigger than itself. When the wolverine hunts a big male moose, it makes a
vigorous leap and clings its teeths into the mooses testicles. For several
kilometers it hangs on there, causing the moose to slowly bleed to death.
Some people claim that this would make the wolverine an unusually
cruel and evil animal. But thats a misinterpretation of the concept of evil.
I believe that I have captured the spirit of the wolverine
in this composition. Please enjoy it.

The Skånes Djurpark Suite: Mården
Once again, back from the undead. Garmisch is forever
ongoing, and there´s gonna be new material, we just need some more time.
While waiting, I would like to present a personal project of mine: The Skånes Djurpark Suite. It´s a newly started project and it´s gonna
Skånes Djurpark is a zoo located about an hour by car from
Malmö. They have only animals that exists naturally in Scandinavia. According
to their website they have over 80 different species.
My plan is to compose a song for every animal.
First installment: ”Mården”. In latin: ”Martes Martes”. In
english: ”Pine Marten”. The estimation is that there´s about 100 000 of them in
Sweden. For more information please google.
It's a simple song, it contains some samples from a radio
play of the infamous swedish novel ”Äldreomsorgen i Övre Kågedalen”, with the
amazing, now late, actor Ernst Günther.
